One third of Guayaquil’s traffic accidents happen on the Perimetral road

One third of Guayaquil’s traffic accidents happen on the Perimetral road

Traffic commission data from 2012 shows that a whopping 32 percent of Guayaquils traffic accidents happen on the same road: the Perimetral Way, which apparently has earned its nickname: "Perimortal."

The Perimetral ring road was built around the periphery of Guayaquil between 1987 and 1988. It was created to connect the north and south of the city with a high-speed freeway. However, as soon as it came into existence ‘land traffickers’ started invading and parcelling out the land that surrounded it. Now, this high speed freeway is lined with low-income neighbourhoods, some which still have no integration with city-managed utilities like electricity, water, sewage, waste removal and roads.

Although the municipality and the national government have built pedestrian overpass walkways at certain specific crossing points on the Perimetral, they are not used exclusively. There are many popular crossing points that still do not have pedestrian overpass walkways, stoplights or any traffic slowing mechanisms at all.

The traffic commission, the CTE, says they register eight accidents a day on the highway. The latest fatal accident happened near the Isla Trinitaria low-income settlement. Four members of a family were hit, and two were killed, crossing the highway in an unsecured spot, far away from any pedestrian walkways or marked zebra crossings.

Traffic police say the driver was speeding.
