Investigations in Quito and Guayaquil lead to drug trafficking arrests
Thanks to three different operations, narcotics police in Quito and Guayaquil have confiscated 600,000 grams of cocaine.
The first operation, codename “Fortín,” detected a truck that has left Colombia and was entering Guayaquil with 330 packages of drug. The drugs were headed to the port to be shipped to the U.S. and Europe. Two Colombians and two Ecuadorians were arrested.
The second, Operation “Cruz Blanca” (white cross), started with the investigation of the March 17 murder of Pablo Yonin Zambrano, a truck driver.
Using a small camera, officers located 206 packages of cocaine hydrochloride under a false floor in the truck bed: 231,000 grams of the alkaloid. One of Yonin’s family members had been travelling with him, but escaped capture.
The third operation uncovered a distribution network in Quito. The salespeople would hand out green business cards with a phone number, photos of women and marijuana leaves. They’d then deliver drug orders to people’s homes.
Police arrested a 50 year-old man at a house containing 128 grams of marihuana and various cars with the phrase “Private Gringo and Gringo Cannabis Club.” Another man holding 3 grams of pot was also arrested and is still being held. The first man has been released.
