Inter-Parliamentary Union brings 1500 parliamentarians to Quito
Members of the international organization based in Geneva meet in Ecuador for the first time tonight for the 128th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
More than fifteen hundred representatives from the parliaments of 140 countries are set to debate security, human rights and social development topics at the meeting, starting at 7 p.m. local time.
Fernando Cordero, president of Ecuador’s National Assembly will act as chair. Ecuador’s president Rafael Correa will also be present for the meeting that will take place in Ecuador’s National Assembly chamber.
Ecuador intends to raise a discussion entitled “From growth for its own sake, to purposeful development.”
“Ecuador’s theme has to do with the concept of Good Living. We will debate the path towards development taken all over the world, to analyze whether we really believe in this capitalist model of growth with no end which has revealed it worst face after the economic crises in the U.S.A. and Spain,” Cordero says.
Forty three parliamentary leaders will be present, as well as 1,157 legislative delegates, 30 Ministers of State, mayors, councilpersons, and military and police commanders.
Assembly participants will take motions approved back to their home countries to present them to their respective parliaments.
