Upon landing in Ecuador, the body of Cristian “Chucho” Benítez underwent a second autopsy, according to the football star’s aunt, Brenda Benítez.

Benítez’s family suspects the 27-year-old athlete did not receive prompt medical treatment in Qatar, and that negligence led to his death.

Luis Chiriboga, president of Ecuador’s professional football federation the FEF, said the autopsy performed in Qatar provided an incomplete explanation.

“No one is satisfied. The report is very brief, it says he had heart failure, but the causes are not known." Chiriboga says the full results of the second autopsy are pending, but preliminary results show Benítez did have a heart condition that "condemned him to death."

Meanwhile, the soccer player’s body is being honoured every step of its transit through Quito. Crowds greeted the plane that arrived at Tababela airport past midnight carrying the coffin. Family and close friends had a private reception in the early morning at a funeral home in Quito. By 8 a.m, Benítez’s body was being received at the stadium where the public visitation is now open.

The line of fans waiting to pay their respects started to form at the Coliseo Rumiñahui stadium in the early morning. Authorities say the mourners will get no more than ten seconds each beside the coffin to say goodbye. Cell phones and cameras are banned.

President Rafael Correa is scheduled to visit the Coliseo this afternoon. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning. Ecuadorian football players from teams all over the world will be flying in to Quito to attend.
